SAND DOLLAR International LLC

Without any product development experience, the only thing the founder of Sand Dollar had is an innovative idea of a patio umbrella with unique product features not yet available on the market - all on a napkin sketch.  Not only did Amazing Lab help realize this rough concept into physical and functional prototypes, we advised Sand Dollar on how to protect the intellectual property related to the product concept through design patent management support.

Concept Development

  • Product Requirement Definition: Collaborated with Sand Dollar to define the functional requirements of the product, taking into and balancing the user experience, targeted BOM costs and technology availability aspects.

  • Conceptual Ideation: Developed multiple engineering concepts from rough hand sketches first available from Sand Dollar, that satisfy the previously defined product requirement specifications.

  • Design Alternatiives Assessment: Out of the multiple engineering concepts, assessed the pro and cons of each, and down-selected one concept that minimizes development and manufacturing risks.

Engineering Development

  • Mechanical Engineering: Provided in-house mechanical design resources to turn the selected engineering concept into a 3D parametric CAD database for further engineering refinement and design-for-manufacutring optimization.

  • Electrical & Software Engineering: Integrated all electro-mechanical sub-systems to align with product requirement specifications, and designed the software human-machine-interface to ensure ease of operating the product by the end users.

  • Technical Program Management: Dedicated program management resources to orchestrate the engineering development and prototype fabrication phases.

  • Proof-of-Concept Prototype Fabrication:  Managed and executed all part fabrication and sourcing, down to the final assembly, testing and verification of the functional prototypes.

RESULTS ACHIEVED

  • Proof-of-Concept Readiness: Successfully delivered multiple fully-functional prototypes that complied with all product requirement specifications.  These prototypes were used for show-and-tell with Sand Dollar's potential investors, and formed a solid design foundation towards a fully manufacturable design in high volume.

  • Design Patent Management: Collaborated with Sand Dollar's IP lawyers to derive engineering documentation necessary for successful design patent application.
