DORY iGARDEN

Dory iGarden is a revolutionary smart IoT device to facilitate indoor growing of a wide variety of herbs and vegetables.  With a looks-like-works-like prototype in hand, the founders needed help to understand the production cost, within which a large portion would be that for tooling fabrication due to the relative large size of the individual plastic parts.  Amazing Lab's deep experience in traditional injection molding, tooling design and fabrication, and also the latest state-of-the-art additive manufacturing techniques came to the rescue.

Production Planning Advisory

  • Design-for-Manufacturing Assessment: Acted as the sole engineering resources for Dory iGarden with the latter having none, reviewed both the overall assembly and individual part level of the existing prototype design, and advised product design refinement necessary to ease future mass production and hence reduce the associated costs; Amazing Lab was also able to provide preliminary BOM costing based on this assessment exercise.

  • Part Fabrication Strategy: Advised the best combination of traditional injection molding vs. additive manufacturing to produce the mechanical parts within the overall product assembly, so as to minimize the initial plastic tooling investment on Dory iGarden's behalf.

RESULTS ACHIEVED

  • Production Cost Planning: Allowed founders of Dory iGarden to understand ahead of time the more significant upcoming investment required to produce their device, so they could plan for their funding raising activities more effectively.

  • Tooling Investment Optimization:  Based on the expected production volume forecast, significantly reduced the upfront plastic tooling costs with some of the parts being able to be produced by additive manufacturing per the advice from Amazing Lab.
